Lately, if I try to download a zip file through my IE v6 browser, it downloads it to some folder that I cannot find, and automatically opens it. It used to prompt me with the dialog box asking whether I wanted to open or save the file. I much preferred this.

Any ideas on how I can force it to again ask me before downloading?

(IE v6, XP SP1)

is this behavior only with zip files ?
any ways try this, in IE go to Tools - Internet Options - Security tab and reset to Default Level, or you can explore the custom level if you want.

I had already done that and it didn't help. Just in case, I again just now went and set security level to default settings, and even checked to make sure that it says to prompt for downloading and it does.

This only happens with zip files and just started doing this about a week ago. I haven't installed anything new, so I can't think of what might have changed it.

Does anyone have any other idea of what to do?

sorry to hear that. I think you need to fix ure file association with MIME types:
In windows explorer, tools, folder options, file types, find the .zip extension: you can delete it from the list, and when you try open a zip file again it will be reset to the default program of your choice; or you can select it then: Advanced, check "confirm open after download".

Rached,

Thank you very much. I selected "confirm open after download" and that took care of it!
