I hope someone can help. Whenever I try to save a jpg image in IE, it saves as a bmp image by default. And I can't choose otherwise. Anyone know how to fix it so that I have an option to save as jpg image?

Thanx

If you right click over the image and click properties you can see what type of image it is. If the image is not a .gif or .jpg but is a .bmp then you will have to save it as a .bmp. If you are just choosing the wrong extension go right click on the image->go save image as-> under file types choose .gif or .jpg. or .bmp If the file is not a .jpg or .bmp you cannot save it as a .jpg or .gif. You will have to use some type of conversion software to change this.

good luck

Thanks for your reply. But the thing is, even though it is a jpg file that I am trying to save, it still defaults to bmp. I have tried to choose jpg under file types as you said but the only available file type is bmp. I have also tried to reinstall internet explorer but the problem remains.

Open Explorer (Not IE), select View, Folder Options, File Types. Find .bmp and associate it with a different program (any graphics program instead of IE). The problem is a trick used by administrators to keep you from saving images...let me explain how it works. First, they use a redirector (such as a cgi script) as the source to the images... an example is:

If you actually use this address, you will get a redirect to this url:

Now, the actual trick here is that internet explorer, as it receives the gif, understands the mime type, and displays it correctly...unfortunately, the content-type (a header) is sent by the cgi and not the image, therefore causing bmp to be the only thing available for "saving". The way around this? go to the url (first above) given as the source to the image, and you will have yet another address (the second) in your address bar... copy and paste it back into the bar, and hit enter...the reloading of the graphic file will update the content type correctly, and viola, you can save the image in its native format.

Hi,
I have also noticed this, but have also noticed that if you look in your Internet Cache for the same filename its often there as a .jpg......

I am experiencing the same problem as first described and nothing has worked. Any image that I try to save, regardless of where it is on the web, will only save in BMP format. I have tried reinstalling IE and have even installed IE 6, but it still doesn't work.

When saving the file, if you leave the default as .bmp, you can goto the file name selection where it should be called, for example, House02, with no file name, and you can add in your own file name after it, ie, House02.jpg and it will save it as a .jpg. If that doesn't work properly (not sure about the later IE6, you can use "" inverted commas at the name of the file to force IE to save it as that...eg, "House02.jpg"
hope this helps!! Jay~
