IE only connects to https sites not http

I can connect using IE 6 to multiple https sites but any http site I try comes back with "The page cannot be displayed." I've tried looking at the security setting but I don't see anything obvious there. Firefox and Netscape work - no problem at all sites so it's appears to definitely be IE. I tried to download IE 6 from MS but when I try to install it I get the message that a newer version is installed and then the install closes. I don't have the IE 7 beta to get around that.

Any ideas?

Never heard of "https" but anyways have you tried using hijackthis or any spyware/addware removers to see if anythings attached itself? Like run adaware ,spybot , hijack this, and others see if you find anything. If you dont have them they can be found at

bcastner - tried IFIX but no luck.

electronicsfreak - https are secure sites, your bank online for example normally uses https, if not for the login at least once your connected.

I've tried resetting to the default setting but no luck with that. Firefox and Netscape will get me to where I need to go but I need to get this fixed for those IE only sites.

Ah ok cool. Learn something new everyday. Always willing to learn lol. As for other things right now the only thing I can think of that might be stopping it is maybe software firewall. Nothing else check with hijackthis and see if you can find anything out of the unusual.

Is there any proxy server involved? IE, Internet Options, Connections.....

My sympathies with "smah" notion above. It really sounds like some firewall restriction on port 80.

I could be wrong but I doubt its the firewall. The firewall has been running for some time and IE use to work with it. The other two browers and my mail have no problems with it. It's almost as if there is a security setting someplace that tells IE only to let encrypted sites through. I've even added some of the regular http sites to my Trusted Sites area but to no affect.

If I get a solution that works I'll post it. Fortunately, I don't need IE for very much.
