i got a virus or something and now every time i start up IE does not respond. task manager will end task but it still freezes. It does this in safe mode too.

I tried to use scanreg and it won't work. something about no extended memory and HIMEM.sys file missing.

I tried to reinstall windows and I don't have enough free disk space.

Can I or how do I delete files like mp3's through dos to free up space to install? save small files to a disk through dos or at least see a list of the files I have, like bookmarks, to make it easier to go back and find them again? through dos, change my start up options so IE won't be the first thing that starts up?

I only have a few things on there preventing me from formatting and if I could save them I would like to. Any help wpuld be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Have you cleaned you hard drive using the system tool, disk clean? You can gain space if it hasn't been used for a while.
To delete a file using DOS, if the drive is formatted in fat32.
Place your win98 boot disk into to the floppy drive. Boot PC, At the A: type c: then when at c: type c:dir /w This will show you the directories on C drive. The /w is a switch that will compact the list of the files so you can read them better, if there is a long list of files.
then type cd name of the file the mp3s are in.
then it will look something like this
C:\mp3>
When you are in the folder the files you want to delete
Then type del *.*
hit enter
That should delete anything in the folder, example of file name, mp3 or what ever you called the folder.

I can't get to the system tools to free up space, the computer freezes to fast. I will try to delete the files through dos and see what happens.

Thanks
