My IE 6.0 makes a sound when I'm browsing. Even though I have turned off all sounds in the Advanced Options, I still get a brief hard-to-describe dull beep sound every few seconds. The only way I know how to stop it is to mute the speakers. I also have all sounds turned off in the XP Control Panel. This is very iritating as you can imagine and I am out of ideas - any suggestions would be appreciated. I even reloaded XP Pro a couple of months ago. I had the sound before and it came right back after being reloaded - seems like it's built into the OS or the browser, but that's hard to imagine.

I had a similar problem. It turned out that some software had modified the "No Sound" profile in the Sounds section of the control panel.

Try scrolling down the list of sounds for your profile, and make sure nothng has a sound associated with it.

Hope this helps,
Dan

Thanks Dan, but nothing has a sound associated with it in the control panel - I scrolled down the list and checked each one.
