Have a user running xp sp1 and when he opens IE6sp1 he gets program error. Nothing specific, just generic send / dont send error message from xp. IE window never launches. Sys restore failed so I removed programs and non msft services from startup, ran spybot, pulled IE from registry, downloaded new copy and re-installed. Symptom was exact same through all of this and the system runs fine other than IE problem. User can browse web fine using msn explorer. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

This is likely due to a BHO (Browser Help Object). These are installed as supposed helpful add-ons to IE. However more often than not these can cause major problems. Examples of ligitimate BHO's would be Yahoo's Browser Companion. These do not get removed when you uninstall/reinstall IE. You can view a list of BHO's along with other software/settings by downloading Hijack This from
You can find a guide on how to use the software here

Following on from "gpalmer711's" advice.

Make sure your options in IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced are correct.

Uncheck the boxes for "Install on Demand" for IE and Other programs (two boxes).

Try running temporarily with the third box "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions" unchecked and see how this goes.

"This specifies that you want to disable features you installed for use with Internet Explorer that may have been created by companies other than Microsoft.
If you encounter problems with Internet Explorer that you cannot resolve, you can use this option to help determine if third-party features are causing the problems without uninstalling the feature. You must restart Internet Explorer after turning this option on or off."

This article and the program BHOcop might be useful to you.
