I have a win2K pro machine with service pack 3 installed. This machine is running IE6 with service pack 1 installed. Everytime my user attempts to open Internet Explorer he gets the error, "Internet explorer has encounted a problem and needs to close" yada yada yada. When you click the link to view the error signature you get

"App: iexplore.exe Ver: 6.0.2800.1106 Module: mfc42.dll Module Ver: 6.0.8665.0 Offset: 0005bf55".

If this isn't enough, he gets this error with his regular network john.doe logon, but if he logs on as administrator on the local machine, IE works fine. IE has already been uninstalled and reinstalled. And the same error comes up.
Any brilliant insights into this problem????????????

The mfc42.dll is a shared microsoft dll. I ran into this problem after I installed a program that overwrote it with an older version. I know its not supposed to happen, but it does. My advise is to go to a pc with the same setup and is working fine, copy that mfc42.dll, rename the one on the problem pc and then place the one you just copied into the problem pc, reboot and see if that fixed it. This worked for me, if you do not have a pc with the same setup, then extract the file from the cd. Good luck.
