ie displays blank screen

my uncle has just given me his acer laptop (os = xp home, ie6) which does not always open webpages, the problem seems to be on some pages. it started yesterday when he set up his subscription to mcafee. he also saw the problem with a site called

http://www.keats.biz

- then going onto the "hazelmere" button then search for "properties in this area" button, on his laptop it opens a blank screen. on my PC's it opens a form.

I have checked for virus - he had 3 MSBLASTER, yaha & bugbear.

i have removed all virus and tested its now clean.

also checked soyware with - adaware, spybot and cwscheder. all now clean.

updated to XP SP1a and run all windows updates.

it still has the problem... another example
if i goto the windows update page
along the top is a search button - white font on blackbackground
if i select search microsoft.com
it opens a blank window...

i have been on this all day - any ideas welcome please
