Every time I try to delete anything from downloaded program files folder in windows it crashes. I had a file which said damanged (right clicking and doing repair never seems to fix the problem) and if I go into DOS I discovered that if you go to %windows%\downloaded program files the files that say damaged don't appear when you do dir. So is there any other (EASY!) way of "removing" the damaged files - as I presume the reson why they say damaged is because they don't exist !!

no - dir only hides read only files by default, not files ready for archive. Otherwise every time you changed a file it would be gone from the dir listing !!!!! Any other ideas of how the Downloaded Program Files folder works? Also, the files appear with a different name when viewed through explorer than viewered with command prompt but I can't figure out where windows get the name from.

Hi

You did not mention the file attributes in your question, so my answer was a guess. But ok, now we know this too.
I hope someone will help you, but until then I suggest to tell us about you Windows version, to not guess that too.

Feherke.

Yes - I guess it would be helpful wouldn't it !! It's XP Pro SP1. The files which appear as damamged definitely do not exist. I've even confirmed this by deleting a file from command prompt and then viewing the folder again in explorer - the status chagned to damaged from installed when the files was removed using del command.
