IE closes down

I think I have a virus. My home page is

http://www.google.com.

When I try a search or when I type in a known URL, IE usually closes. I say usually because I have managed to do a Google search but then when I click on a link, IE closes. If I open more than one window for IE they all close. I am running Windows XP and IE6 on my laptop. My AV software is AVG and was up to date to 30.12.2003 until today. I updated it today to 02.01.2004 and ran a test. It detected and healed the Java/Byte verify virus but the problem is not fixed. Any suggestions?

Did you even restart your machine?

Follow the advice at this FAQ and then, if your problem isn't resolved, post your Hijack This! log for someone to take a look at.

Make sure you disbale system restore before you start troubleshooting or anything you have will likely come right back.

Only thing that looks suspiscous is this one:
Do you use Netscape?

I would remove it, making sure you keep a backup of it, and see if it fixes your problem.

No I don't usually use Netscape and it wasn't running at the relevant times. However, I have just tested it and it is working normally. I would be astonished if that was the cause.
