I'm running Windows98 SE and AOL 8.0 on a cable modem.
All of a sudden one day last week I can't log on to internet. After spending a week on the phone with AOL and Time Warner Cable Techs> I can ping the AOL site by IP address but can not ping using site name. Techs tell me I have a problem with my IE browser. I have reinstalled Win98 SE but can not clear up problem. AOL techs can't help.

Thanks

Hi,
Okay I ran the Winsock fix. Is there something else, I need to do, cause it's still not working?

Thanks so much!

Download (obviously from another pc) SpyBot and sweep your machine:
Some spyware(s) can cause this sort of behavior by mucking with DNS settings.

Post back if no joy...

Hi,
I don't use any kind of Spyware, but I ran SpyBots anyway. Still, no cigar. Any other suggestions, please. I'm backed against a wall here.

Thank you,

NetNet711,

You don't use spyware, it uses you...(i.e. it frequently gets on your machine without you knowing it, by design), hence the SpyBot recommendation. However, no dice, so I'm looking into a few possibilities...I'll get back with you.

Try this fix from a visitor, posted in thread581-177979:

"1. Make sure you have your OS CD or the correct .CAB files available for the particular version of 98/98se/ME.

2. Remove ALL instances of TCP/IP from Network Properties. DO NOT reboot when prompted to do so.

3. Delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\AFVXD

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\DHCP

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\DHCPOptions

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\Winsock2

4. Reboot.
5. Reinstall TCP/IP.
6. Reboot."

Hi, Carrr

Okay, I only know enough about computers to get me in trouble. So could you be a little more specific about the procedure, that you so kindly posted for me.

To delete all TCP/IP in Network Prop. I would go through Settings, Control Panel, Networks?

Where do I delete the registry keys?

How do I reinstall TCP/IP?

Sorry, I'm such a bother.

Thanks so much,

NetNet711

No prob...

1) Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network > under COnfiguration, find TCP/IP > Remove

DON'T REBOOT YET

2) This part gets dicey. You could really screw up your machine here with a misstep, so you should back up your registry first. Follow the instructions here:

Once you've done this, go to: Start > Run > type in regedit > starting at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, start cliking your way down to the keys I posted above. Delete them one by one.

Reboot.

Reinstall TCP/IP (the reverse of removing it, using the ADD button on the Configuration tab).

Reboot.
