Have a computer with IE 6.x and WinXP Home.

Several websites I visit will have links automatically created in them. It seems to based on keywords. I know this isn't in the source of the website, because it happens to a website that I help manage.

IE seems to create the links based on the words, and links them to 'relivant' websites.

Why does it do this, and is there a way to prevent this either by the website (prefered) or by the client.

Awww, they are called 'smart tags', and the way to disable them from the site:

meta name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="TRUE"
