IE and Word .dot files with VBA

From IE 5.5, I am selecting a URL to link to a Word 97 template (.dot file.) IE is set to open the Word application along with the file. The .dot file includes VBA code in a macro named AutoNew which normally is triggered when a template is opened using Word's File\New.

Problem: From IE and the URL, opening Word and the .dot file does not trigger the VBA code. I have tried using both AutoNew and AutoOpen macros but with no success.

Note: Using Netscape Explorer to open a file in Word and using a Word .doc file and the AutoOpen allows the VBA code to trigger.

Any suggestions as to how or if VBA code can trigger from a Word 97 .dot file linked to from IE?
