IE 7 not connecting on link in webpage

When I click on a link on a webpage, IE 7 opens a new tab but shows 'connecting..' on tab and does not connect. If I configure to not use tabs, but to open a new window instead, then when I click on the the link, nothing happens.
I have tried various links.

This used to work. Any ideas?

(for now I am using firefox instead until I get this resolved)
 
Can System Restore correct this problem?

Have you tried IE7 with No Add-ons via System Tools?

try re-registering urlmon.dll - Open a command prompt with admin privledges and type regsvr32 urlmon.dll
 
Thanks for the suggestions.
I tried re-registering urlmon.dll, but that does not solve the problem. Note that when clicking on a link, a new tab is created, and I see "connecting.." in the new tab. The original url still shows up on the url line however, i.e. the new link url does not show. The tab never stop showing "connecting.." and does not connect.
 
What firewall are you using? Is it ZoneAlarm?

Do Tab's work if you load "Safe Mode with Networking"?

Have you tried cleaning out your Temporary Internet Files and other Temp files?
 
Running with no add-ons make no difference. I'd like to completely reinstall IE7 because it used to work. Is there a way in Vista to do that w/o do a complete Vista reinstall?
 
I don't think you can re-install IE7 in Vista?





You could try resetting Internet Explorer settings. (Help and Support article)

"If disabling add-ons doesn't solve the problem, try resetting Internet Explorer back to its default settings. This removes all changes that have been made to Internet Explorer since it was installed, but it does not delete your favorites or feeds.

Close all Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer windows.

Click to open Internet Explorer.

Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.

Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.

Click Reset.

When you are done, click Close, and then click OK.

Close Internet Explorer and reopen it for the changes to take effect."
