Hi,
Much to my dismay I have loaded IE6 onto my home computer.
It seemed to run OK for a while but I am now encountering
a very slow intial load time (well over a minute). I am now so fed up I am trying to revert to 5.5 but when I try to I only get the option to repair not remove IE6. I have read some articles on this but I am still unsure of my next move. Any help would be appreciated.

You didn't say whether you tried the repair.

This is totally undocumented, but if your confident with your registry skills and you're running Win98SE and you want to restore or repair Internet Explorer and it doesn't appear in Add/Remove Programs or under the Tools Menu of System Information, then go to Start>Run, type regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\IE Setup\Options
Right-click on Options and choose new>DWORD value, name it AllowUninstall, right-click on it, choose modify and give it a value of 1.

Now go to Start>Run, and type:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

MORE INFORMATION
Before you uninstall Internet Explorer 6.0, quit all running programs. For additional information about problems that can occur if you do not quit all running programs before you uninstall Internet Explorer 6.0, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q165646 Program Settings Lost After Internet Explorer Setup or Uninstall
When you install Internet Explorer 6.0 over Internet Explorer 5.01 or later, its uninstallation behavior varies depending on whether the Internet Explorer uninstallation information (used to restore the version of Internet Explorer prior to 5.01 or later) is present and whether the Internet Explorer 5.01 or later installation created minor version uninstallation information for previous versions of Internet Explorer.

If uninstallation information is present when you install Internet Explorer 6.0, the uninstallation process restores your computer to the version of Internet Explorer that is contained in the uninstallation information. However, if Internet Explorer uninstallation information is not present when you install Internet Explorer 6.0 over a previous version of Internet Explorer, the uninstallation restores the previous versions of Internet Explorer.

This chart lists the various upgrade scenarios and the Internet Explorer 6.0 uninstallation behavior that can occur in each situation:

Previous version Uninstallation information Internet Explorer 6.0 uninstallation results

Internet Explorer 3.x N/A Internet Explorer 3.x
Internet Explorer 4.x N/A Internet Explorer 4.x
Internet Explorer 5 Present Version installed before Internet Explorer 5
Internet Explorer 5 Not Present Internet Explorer 5
Internet Explorer 5.01 Present See note below
Internet Explorer 5.01 Not Present Internet Explorer 5.01
Windows 98 (Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1 N/A Windows 98 (Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1)
Windows 98 Second Edition (Internet Explorer 5) N/A Windows 98 Second Edition (Internet Explorer 5)
Windows 2000 (Internet Explorer 5.01 N/A Windows 2000 (Internet Explorer 5.01)
Windows Me (Internet Explorer 5.5) N/A Windows Me (Internet Explorer 5.5)

NOTE: In the case of uninstalling Internet Explorer 6.0 from an upgrade over Internet Explorer 5.5, where uninstallation information existed, the computer is restored to the version of Internet Explorer that is contained in the uninstallation information (the version that was installed before Internet Explorer 5.5).

For example, when you upgrade from Internet Explorer 4.01 directly to Internet Explorer 5, Internet Explorer 5 creates uninstallation information you can use to restore the computer to Internet Explorer 4.01. If you then upgrade from Internet Explorer 5 to Internet Explorer 5.01 or later, uninstallation information already exists, so no new uninstallation information is created.

Finally, when you upgrade to Internet Explorer 6.0, if the uninstallation information exists at this point, no new uninstallation information is created. If you uninstall Internet Explorer 6.0 in this case, Internet Explorer 4.01 is restored. If you remove the uninstallation information before you upgrade to Internet Explorer 6.0, new uninstallation information is created for Internet Explorer 5.01 or later. In this case, the uninstallation of Internet Explorer 6.0 returns the computer to Internet Explorer 5.01 or later.

How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 6.0
Use the following steps to uninstall Internet Explorer 6.0 from a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows Me.

NOTE: You must have administrative privileges to install and uninstall Internet Explorer 6.0 in Windows NT and Windows 2000. This includes having administrative privileges the first time you start your computer after you install or uninstall Internet Explorer 6.0.
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.

On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools in the list of installed programs, and then click Add/Remove.

NOTE: If Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools is missing from the list of installed programs, run Setup.exe from your "Internet Explorer\Setup" folder. If you are running Windows 2000, run the w2kexcp.exe /u command from your "Internet Explorer\IE Uninstall" folder.

Click Restore the previous Windows configuration (or click Advanced to specify any additional components you want to remove), and then click OK.

The Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools Setup dialog box appears. This portion of Setup is referred to as Maintenance mode. When Setup starts, click OK to restore the previous version of Internet Explorer and shared components.

You are prompted to verify that you want to restore the previous version. Click Yes to start the uninstallation process. When the uninstallation process finishes, click Restart Windows when you are prompted to do so.

Thanks for your very informative reply. I did try the repair but the problem remains. I shall now try another uninstall although I have tried that before with no result.
