I am running Windows XP and IE 6 locks up/freezes everytime I right click to open in new window command/internet ad pop up/or a site I am browsing link causes a new window to pop up. I am pretty sure it has something to do with my registry. The last thing I recall doing was using Lavasoft's Adware to remove all the spyware I had on my pc after I had uninstalled Kazaa. Like the idiot I am at times didn't do a back up. after that the problems started to occur. the new window will appear and start loading the images/text but stop all together after a few seconds along with the first window. I have read the lenghty thread of "Can't Open a New Window" and tired all the regserv32 commands for the .dll files and they all go through sucessfully but my problem still persists. I have heard about repairing IE but am not totally clear on how to do that. any help would be appreciated. :)

Me too! I have no idea why this happens, but IE6 just crashes when popups appear, or even if I try to open a new window from an existing one! I dont think its your adaware software, I just think its a huge ie6 bug on xp, as all xp clients in our office have done this after a period of time :(

I think this is a severe problem with ie, as some other people in my office have had this issue.

Its so bad, i've moved to Opera!!

Anyone, can you help!

Review the information in MS Knowledge Base Article # Q318378 for instructions on repairing IE6 in XP.

Did you try running the command

regsvr32 urlmon.dll joegz
"Sometimes you just need to find out what it's not first to figure out what it is."

nope, still locks up.

What would registering urlmon.dll do for you anyway?

well thats no use, since its there only workaround and i'm still stuffed...

bah, micro$oft at there finest.

The culprit could be oleaut32.dll or mshtml.dll (flash back to old days of IE4)

You may want to check out the other suggestions at thread608-132319 joegz

I also changed "hardware acceleration" to 'None'. So far so good!

I had the same problem and registering the file shdocvw.dll
fixed my problem

Start, Run, regsvr32 shdocvw.dll

Hope this helps

I just figured I'd mention that I'm having the exact, precise same problem as flxc4p4str is. When he described his problem on July the 11th, it was like he was explaining precisely what's happening to my computer. I'm running the exact same system (Windows 2000 with IE 6.0.26), and having the same identical problem. I've tried several of the fixes in this thread, including the registering of dlls and the mcrepair installation, but I'm still having the problems.

What might be of importance to this particular problem that flxc4p4str and I are having, is Ad-aware. I installed it around a year ago, and never had any problems with it. However, about a week ago I started getting annoying popup advertisements even from trusted sites that I know for a fact don't advertise. I figured it was probably some kind of spyware or adware, so I ran the Ad-Aware program to remove it, as I normally would. I can't be certain, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this is what started the problem with Internet Explorer. I'm not 100%, but it's the only thing I can think of that might have triggered the problem.

I doubt uninstalling Ad-Aware will help, but I might give it a go. It seems a little more likely that it's deleted something that IE was using. Then again, I've reinstalled IE several times and it still suffers the problem, so maybe not.

I'm stumped. I just hope flxc4p4str is still reading this, and might have some suggestions.

ok, after reading whole thread, i realized something that solved the my problem:

System:
Windows 2000

Symptom:
Internet Explorer 6 pop-up hangs

Solution:
This problem started after I installed Office XP. Since Office XP uses some features of IE (Outlook), I figured that Office XP installed some Windows XP components onto my system, causing a imcompatibility with my IE6 installed on Windows 2000. Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove programs and repair Internet Explorer 6. It should bring the browser to its original configuration.

I KNOW IT WON'T WORK FOR EVERYBODY, BUT WILL HELP SOME OF YOU.

Please let me know if it works for you.

hehe, no, "muffpuppet" means pretty much the same thing here.

Glad it seems to be working for you though.

I've found that once you've deleted the directory, when you start up windows you may get an error message saying that it can't locate the "GStartup.lnk" file. That's just the Gator registry software trying to find the files you've just deleted. To fix it, either sift through your registry for the part that's trying to load "GStartup.lnk" and delete it, or simply get a registry program like Registry First Aid and get it to fix the invalid registry key.

Probably any of these registry editors will fix the error message:

Just use the program to scan your registry, then find the keys relating to Gator, GMT, or "GStartup.lnk", and delete or fix them. After that, all should be well.

Bear in mind, this is only if you're getting the GStartup.lnk error message (which is harmless anyway, just a nuisance). This post is not a solution to the IE lockup problem (just in case you're too lazy to have read my previous post). :)

Hmm, update:

If you do get the "Gstartup.lnk" error message whenever you start windows, after deleting the GMT directory, then all you have to do to get rid of it is delete the "Gstartup.lnk" file from your Startup directory. It's as simple as that. I assumed it was in registry, but it turns out it isn't after all. So you don't need to download any registry programs like I said before. Apologies to anyone who went to the trouble.

All you need to do is do a search (Start Menu -> Search -> Files or Folders) for "Gstartup.lnk". When it finds the file, delete it. That'll stop the error message.

OMG! Muffpuppet u r a star :)

TRY IT NOW! it works, I've tried EVERYTHING else, and this is the one!!

I'm gonna monitor this for a while tho, just in case, but it really works :)

thank god

thank muffpuppet!

First make sure that in Internet Options/Advanced "Java JIT Compiler enabled" is checked.
If it isn't, check it, and click OK.

Now go to the Security tab, click 'Internet', then click 'restore defaults'

Now check whether Java is in fact installed, enabled and running at the following sites:

Java test

another Java test

If no joy, install the latest version of Microsoft Virtual Machine

Before you install, find msjava.dll and rename it msjava.old

Good luck, Tony

Muffpuppet you're a genius!!
When ie6 would lock-up I always noticed GMT.Exe after doing
a ctrl-alt-del to end the ie6 process. As soon as I got rid
of the gmt.exe process, ie 6 worked like gangbusters. Great
detective work man. If you were here the next beer (or 2 or 3)
would be on me.

Hehe, so many beers on offer! Makes me think that a job as a Systems Analyst might be worth a look. ;)

Glad the fix is helping though. Especially glad that you got hold of it, flxc4p4str. I was beginning to wonder if you'd seen it. Heh. I'd take you up on the offer of a pint, but travelling the 8,000 miles from England for one drink seems a little expensive. :)
