An application on my PC requires that IE 6.0 be installed on my hard drive. When I try to install IE 6.0, I get the following error message during the installation: "Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all applications and try running Setup again." This is Windows ME. I can't get past this error - all other application are already closed. Any help would be appreciated.

Second thought.

The installation process is decidedly tricky in its command line.

I would download the Full IE package, and use Daniel Petri's advice about how to launch the installation.
While the advice was written for Win2k/XP I believe it should work for ME but do not know. The trickiness is due to syntax issues with the MSI installer, and I believe it will work for you:

Bump

I am getting this exact same message whenever I go to repair my corrupted IE6 SP1 installation also.

I have attempted to run the add/remove IE6 listing, and attempt to repair it from there, only to have it complete and restart the computer with no repair really performed (it does go through and seem to re-register multiple DLL's according to the logs, but nothing is truly fixed)

I have also downloaded the full IE6 install, and attempted to run that both in normal, and in safe mode, with the same message as the person above.

I was hoping someone might have some more information, I have just about ran out of ideals, turned off active desktop, disabled system restore, and reinstalled ME. At this point, I'd be happy to remove it and then reinstall, except there really doesn't seem to be a way to uninstall it back to version 5.5.

A quote from Daniel Petri: "Note: Just copy and paste the above line. Don't try to be a wise guy. Copy the damn line! I've received quite a few feedbacks about the accuracy of this tip, and always they got the syntax wrong. Copy and bloody paste! Oh, and yes, this tip works for IE 6 SP1 too, and so will older IE versions. Just replace the "6" in the previous line with a "5" and so on."

One thing that may not be obvious: be inside the directory containing the download.

Tried that again, just to make sure I had typed everyhing in correctly, got the affected system attached to the network, and downloaded the ie6setup.exe from the above links.

I cleared the directory of all previous files and cabs, and ran the program with the exact command line as you asked.

It'll start the setup, ask me to agree to the liscense, ask what OS I want IE for, and download the necessary cabs and other files.

then it just completes, and says if you wanna run the installation to go run it from the <x> path, where X is where i have it stored.

Is it supposta stop there and tell you to manually run the setup file?

When I do that, run the ie6setup program, it starts, asks me to agree to the liscense, asks if I want a standard, or custom installation. I choose standard, setup starts to process, gets to about 3%, shoots to 100% and comes up with the message:

"Setup was unable to install all of the components. Please close all applications and try running Setup again."

this is the same message I have been getting from the start, no matter if I close all active programs, run it in safe mode, or what.

There doesn't seem to be any log file that the actual setup creates (there is a IE Setup Log, but that doesn't seem to be touched whenever I run setup)

If I attempt to run the ie6setup program again, it will present me with 2 options, to either continue the exisitng setup, or start a new setup. Both options lead back to the original problem, whereas it acts like its doing it, but will ultimatly come back and fail the installation.
