Windows XP SP1
IE 6 SP1
I had an issue with a user today where IE 6 would peg the cpu. I would still be able to use it but it would be incredibly slow. Also, whenever I did a search at google.com, I wold automatically be forwarded to the MySearch search engine. When I wanted to close IE, I would have to go in task manager and end the process (Not the task). I did a number of things such as reboot, virus scan, spyware scan, etc. and came up empty.
I ended up going back my desk and doing some searching. I found this web link:
It didn't solve my issue but it pointed me in the right direction. It was referring to some unknown ie dll's on the root of the Windows. When I looked at my machine, I found that the only ie file I had in there was ieuninst.exe. However, when I looked at the troubled users PC, she had 3 iexplorr%num%.dll where %num% was a random number. First, I closed IE and renamed the .dll to .old. When I reopened IE, everything was better. It was no longer pegging the cpu and and my google searches was actually searching the google web site. I figured this would be a helpful tip.
