Hello,
I have a computer running Windows XP Home. It was brought to me to clean all of the viruses off of it. Which I am done with, and now I wan't to install all of the windows updates to prevent most from reaccuring. Here is my setup

-Windows XP Home SP1
-I have the system up on my work network that is part of a domain but the pc is not part of the domain.
-Member of a workgroup
-Static IP address
-Connection to the internet - I am able to ping sites such as google via IP address. but can't access them through IE 6
-I have a valid DNS server up and running
-Other systems on the network are operating fine - with exact same settings.

This has got to be the most frustrating situation I have ever seen. I have connectivity but no content. The computer could hit the internet before I cleaned off all of the Trojan horses and such.

Anybody have any Ideas? I will try any!!

You probably damaged the winsock settings....not at all uncommon when cleaning up malwares.

. First step is to make sure that critical DLLS and other sides of IE are in good order. Use IEFix - excellent freeware - unlucing the SFC scannow option:
. Second step:

Persistent issues with connecting to the Internet, but being unable to resolve any address, is the consequence of one or both of these issues:

. A Winsock Service stack corruption - frequently due to malware, or poorly written installation programs for legitimate programs; and/or,

. TCP/IP Service issues.

Start with Repairing your Winsock Service:

. if NOT using Service Pack 2, see faq779-4625 and use the "WinsockFix" utility discussed there;

. if you are using Service Pack 2 for XP:

Start, Run, CMD

netsh winsock reset catalog

(Wait for the prompt telling you a reboot is necessary. Reboot).

If a Winsock Service repair did not help, Repair the TCP/IP Service:

1. Right-click the network connection, and then click Properties.
2. Click Install.
3. Click Protocol, and then click Add.
4. Click Have Disk.
5. Type C:\Windows\inf, and then click OK.
6. On the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
7. Restart the computer.

Third step: malware issues of all kinds can cause this. See the detection/cleanup steps suggested in faq608-4650
