Have a brother using Win2k/IE6 who inadvertently opened an email which was phising for his Paypal password. He began to fill out the info the email requested but before sending it off, decided it didn't sound right so he closed the email. However, since then he has been getting "This page cannot be found" whenever he attempts to access his eBay or PayPal accounts when his password is required. He can access both using Firefox. He was able to go in and change his passwords via Firefox but even with the new passwords, cannot access either site using IE. He has run 3 or 4 different spyware/adware scans, deleted all his cookies and temporary files, and I had him reset the IE browser to its default settings but none of these things has fixed the problem. I am thinking that maybe there is an add-on that needs to be deleted or something in the registry that needs to be cleaned out. Any suggestions on how to restore his IE browser would be most appreciated. He is happy using Firefox but I would like to know how to fix the problem.

Thanks,
Jan

Clearing the cached info was the first thing we tried but it didn't help. Thanks for the tip however.

Are you accessing it from the "Favorites"? If so, the malicious email could have manipulated the URL stored in the Favorites entries. Keep in mind that there is a flaw in IE that makes it possible to display URL in the address bar that is different from the actual site being accessed.

also check for a hosts file entry and remove it.

default location is C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\Hosts

look for something like:
165.44.66.23 paypal.com
and delete the line.

and no, the file has no extension
