IE 6.0 won't download .exe file 3

I recently installed IE 6.0 on my ME system using a disc sent to me by Microsoft. Since then, I can not download a file if it has an .exe extension. When I try it, I get a blank screen with a small box in the upper left corner; within the box are 3 tiny shapes.
I'm not sure this problem started with IE 6.0 - I may have had the problem in 5.5 also.
Of course, this problem prevents me downloading any file from Microsoft which may fix the problem.
Any ideas, anyone?

This should fix it. Click start--run--type regedit and click ok. Doubleclick on each of these:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins

After you doublelclick the Plugins key you'll see a key named Extension underneath. Right click on it and delete it. Don't worry it's safe to delete. Then close regedit and restart the computer.

Note: i'm referring to the Extension key under Plugins not the Extensions key under Internet Explorer. Don't delete the wrong one cause they aren't the same.

I have deleted
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension
and restarted my computer.
IE seems to be working OK, but I will have to find a download and test it. I will let you know the result.

I have tested my IE 6 with a download from Microsoft's site.
It went very smoothly. It was a small file (82K) but size did not seem to be a factor with the problem I was having.
