ie 5.5 - opening pdf, xls, etc. files in open app. window

Windows NT4 Workstation SP6
IE 5.5

I have an issue with a PC which won't open PDFs, Excel files, etc. in their own application. Instead it tries to open them in the browser window, fails, and then produces different error messages.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
Is this a Registry setting?

Seems to me that the file assignments have been messed with.
If you use the file explorer and double-click on an Excel file, does it happen also ?

If yes, then you need to reassign file extensions. Right-click on the file, and do not choose Open but Open With (or the second Open below, if there is one). You should then be presented with a dialog box in which you can set the correct app for the file.

Thanks pmonett - I actually ran a repair on IE and that seemed to fix it.
