Hi there -

Maybe I can explain this well enough for everyone to understand.

I have IE 5.5

Sometimes, when I click a link that opens a new window... the new window comes up in small form, maybe 1 inch by 1 inch. I have to click the Maximixe icon in the new window, then it expands fine.

This just started happening recently.

Is there a setting that says 'Always open windows Maximized'?

Thanks, John

Try this...it works for IE6, maybe it will for 5.5:

Close all windows EXCEPT the one that open "minimized"; right click on your Task Bar, either on the open space on the right or left end (your choice); select "Tile Windows Horizontally" and IE will maximize; close IE. Re-open IE and it will be maximized.

Here are a number ways .

Windows opened by clicking hyperlinks, they need to be resized manually:

Start IE5 , right click any URL and select Open in a New Window .
Go back to the first IE5 window you opened and close it .
Return to the second window and manually drag it to fill the screen .
( Do not use the maximize button , that's a temporary setting that will not be retained )

Now press the Ctrl button , and close this second window , holding the Ctrl button depressed ,
using 'close' in the File menu (important!) .
All windows should now open maximized .

---------------------------------------

Another tip .
Sometimes Internet Explorer may have problems with it's explorer window
location, possibly placing the window off the screen or only allowing
you to minimize or maximize the window. This tweak should reset
Internet Explorer to the default position.

Exit Internet explorer, then open your registry and find the key below.

Find the value named 'Window_Placement' and delete it, make sure you
have highlighted the correct value as there is no Undo function.

Restart Internet Explorer and it should now be located in the default
position.

Registry Settings:
Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
Value Name: Window_Placement
Data Type: REG_BINARY

------------------------------------

Right-click on the I Explorer icon , select Properties > Run >
select Maximize .

--------------------------------

AutoSizer ( freeware ) program to position windows automatically &
keep them there in the size you want ( ie,IE5 puts new windows in different places )
It can be found here along with several other great utilities .

-----------------------------------

ResizeEnable
Turn non-resizeable windows into resizeable windows!

---------------------------------------

IE New Window Maximizer 2.2 - A little program that will maximize
every new Internet Explorer window that you open. It can also
hide/close all IE windows and automatically close popup windows. This
is freeware - download from this URL

Good stuff, jmatt, but would only include a comment where you say..."there's no undo".
It is possible, in fact, preferable, to have an undo when editing the registry.
Before you delete a key, you can highlight the 1 you're gonna' kafritz and go to the menu at the top and choose Export Registry File and save the key somewhere you can find it with a name you'll recognize.
THEN do the deleting and IF you need to get it back, you can easily do that by navigating to the file and all you have to do is double-click on it...restoring the key.
Quite a few times of careless (shall we say unjudicious) editing of the registry have taught me this.

Thanks gargouille , have collected those tips over the last 3 years .

Felt the the wording would be OK , as it would make the user be carefull .

Now you have made me have a rethink & I will edit that part of my file to point out the export feature .

Wow, thanks guys,

and no one is more scared of changing the registry than me. I'll print it and copy it before making any changes.

Thanks for your suggestions. John

John , just to make you a little less fearfull of the registry , if you have W98 it keeps backups of the registry .
If you have something else let us know , because they will have something as well . Here is the info on 98 .

How to go back to a good copy of the registry .

Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMI pool message comes on ) or Press
Ctrl during bootup , depends on your computor .

Select , Command prompt only . ( NOT Safe mode Command prompt )

After the C prompt , type , scanreg /restore

Follow the prompts and select a registry dated prior to the problems .

This article describes how to restore a backup copy of the Windows 98
or Windows Millennium Edition (Me) registry

Start the System Restore Tool from a Command Prompt in Windows XP (Q304449)

To improve on the 5 days MS have on registry backups , use the Cabrest system below & get 14 days .

For those that find the above site confusing , here is what to do .

Alter MaxBackupCopies from 5 to 14 as per instructions at above site or it can be done this way .
Start > Find > Files or Folders , type scanr in the top space ( Named ) , make sure the 3rd
space ( Look in ) is set to where your operating system is ( usually C ) & press Enter .
Right click on Scanreg ( C:Windows > configuration settings ) & click on open & change from 5
to 14 . Close & save .

Download the zipped copy of the Batch file from ,

Unzip , copy & paste cabrest onto the top of C: in Windows Explorer .

Delete zip file , or save it on floppy , if you want it for others or the
future .

Print the instructions below & stick on your comp in front of you , so
when you have to go back to a good copy of the registry , you don't
need to search for them .

------------------------------------

Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMI pool message comes on ) or Press Ctrl
during bootup , depends on your computor .

Select , Command prompt only .

Type in cabrest & press Enter , keep answering y & you will see a
table , which will allow you to select which CAB file to restore from .
So , for example , to restore from rb009 cab , you look at the table &
see 09 corresponds to the letter j . You type j & Not the number .
Follow instructions .

To exit . Press , Ctrl / Alt / Delete together .

If after following the instructions to Restore , things arn't
working , go to an earlier date & try again .
