A user at my workplace is having a problem with IE5.5. When you attempt to launch IE, it gives an illegal operation error. The details state that:

Iexplore has caused an invalid page fault in module user32.dll

I have looked through Microsoft's knowledge base and I don't seem to find anything relating to this particular error (other errors yes, but not this one).

When I do a repair of IE, the error is still there. If I "uninstall" (ie, roll it back to IE 4.0) the browser works just fine.

The computer is Windows 98 SE. It's a Gateway system, PII 333Mhz.

Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?

Sounds similar to a problem I had recently with a corrupted Winsock2. I found it by installing Netscape which gave me a better message.

Search for the title:
"Netscape unable to create network socket connection"

GL700 provides the correct answer.

Another test you can do to see if your having this problem is to pick a commonly available site like Google or Yahoo and make note of it's IP address. Use the PING command on the dotted-quad address and again on the URL name. If the dotted-quad works and the name fails it is probably your Winsock2.

Good luck...wee
