IE 5.5 hangs on username and password verification when connecting to

Hi,
IE 5.5 is hanging for about 2 minutes at Verifying Username and Password, when logging via Dial Up to an ISP.
The ISP is Earthlink and I can connect up fine to it with a different computer. I've already tried, Un/reinstalling Win98se, Running Windows Update, Upgrading to IE 5.5, and using different modems (both internal, and external) to connect with no success. The only other thing I can think of is to flash the BIOS, but if y'all have any other ideas I'd really appreciate the help.
