Problem
When surfing using IE 5.5, approximately 1 in 5 page refreshes causes my system to freeze for around one minute with no data transfer, the cursor when moved over the menu bars changes to an egg-timer, however the rest of the page shows a normal cursor.

Advice to date
My ISP (Telstra) has asked me if the links were overseas as this can cause delays. It happens on my own website or even when working off-line. The ISP referred me to the Hardware vendor. Hard/ven said it sounds like an ISP issue, possibly a driver conflict. I have disabled some of the installed NIC's and this has not resolved the problem.

Solution wanted
ADSL gives me quick responses usually, I want each refresh to occur quickly and remove this problem of waiting approximately 60 seconds for a screen to start refreshing. This problem has been occurring for 6 months can anyone help?

Are there any exclamation marks visible in Device Manager, that would signal a hardware conflict. You said you disables some of the NIC's, how many do you have, and for what reason? If you are working ofline and it still happens, then it is less likely to be an ISP issue. Have you tried repairing IE, Control Panel > Add/remove programs > Microsoft Internet Explorer and choose the repair option.

I have a cure for your problem, well at least i do if you just happen to have a network card installed (bet ya do!!!!)
The problem seems to be a conflict between the auto IP adress generated for the network card by windows, and ip`s used by IE.
heres how to cure it.
Do you have an unused network card installed on your computer? If so, disable it via device manager.

Also, the following settings can sometimes help (my grateful thanks go to Steve Winograd for his advice and guidance about the following - you can find Steve's FAQ site here - an excellent source of Networking information
Add an IP address to your network card (ie 10.1.1.1) or (192.1.1.1) and the subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Those on a network may prefer to use 192.168.0.1 and subnet 255.255.255.1

To do that go to "Control Panel" then "Network" then "TCP/IP->you Network card" then "properties" then "Specify an IP address"

If you are running Win2K, then the following steps are used to assign the static IP to the Local Area Connection:

1. Open Network Connection, open Local Area Connection
2. In the Local Area Connection, click Properties, then double-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
3. Click "Use the following IP Address" checkbox
4. Enter the IP Address 192.1.1.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0
5. Click OK

I trake no credit t all for this fix, just finding it, but it worked for me and i was extremely grateful.

Good Luck

Malakili,
Thanks Thanks Thanks for this advice!
I was having frequent long hangs in IE 5.5 and IE 6 over a dialup that were driving me up a wall. It was clear that it was this machine (Win ME) and not Bellsouth.

You have saved me from internet despair. Bellsouth, Gateway and Microsoft was all no help in solving this problem. And as a tech person (though NOT a networking guru), I have spent many hours surfing the net trying to find a solution and your advice did it.

See you,

Shame on me for not responding sooner, like Drzorgon, I too spent hours and hours looking for an answer which was answered in your response. I asked many guru's, to their credit some of the said it sounded like a conflict. I don't know what it means or how someone worked out the codes but I now surf much happier.

Thank You, Thank You, THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES!!!

Kierond: For Your question, that I found with a little help from a search engine.
Malaki and Steve Winograd: For Your excellent solution.

I´m the "PC-master" :) in our home, with a 4-PC-network with both Win98 and WinME.
I ran into this problem about a year (?) ago.
I was qrying out loud in the beginning, and searched the web, but at that time I didn´t find any solutions.
I even called my, and a few other, ISP:s and my ISDN- (phone-) company, but they had NEVER heard about this problem :-( .
So, now it´s fixed, and I am SOOOO HAPPY!!!
