IE 5.0 problems

everytime i go to explorer, i get the "illegal operation" box..when i click details, it tells me "invalid page fault in module mfc42.dll
i had the IE 6.0 update, but everytime i logged on, it said there was a problem and would shut down..send error report
i am running win98se....PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Delete all files in the temp directory and reboot...
