I have a weird problem with Internet Explorer.

All of a sudden, when trying to use IE, it will not pull up a webpage. I have uninstalled/reinstalled from 5.0 to 6.0SP1. >:-<

I have found that if I go to My Computer, open it and type the URL in the bar (shows your drives etc.) it will browse just as IE. :)

I have installed Netscape 7.0 and it works fine. :)

Any ideas?

Have you tried to repair your version of IE? Open the Control Panel > Add/remove programs and then chose IE. The dialog box that opens up gives you the opportunity to repair your version. Give that a try We are always looking for new members at our computer forums: Please come join our community too.

Thanks for replys (Kento & dumdum)

As I said, we have tried repair, uninstall, reinstall with no luck. Clicking on IE itself will not work. If we use the My Computer window (as if you had active desktop on), you can surf via the computer view! I can also surf using Netscape. It is not a TCP/IP problem, Winsock, etc.

Only IE will not work.

I have never seen this...

Can IE load a web page if you use the IP address rather than a DNS address.

For example instead of cnn.com enter the IP of

When you said "clicking on IE itself will not work", are you saying that it won't even open?

If it opens, then definitely try using an IP address instead of the host name as joegz mentioned.

If it doesn't open, then you've got a more serious problem on your hands. First let us know what OS you're running. You may need to use a utility to manually remove IE and all its registry keys, then reinstall...

Thank you both for reply..

Yes, I have tried IP besides domain name and it will not resolve.

My question is also why does the address bar in My Computer work and not IE itself? >:-<
Doesn't the My Computer address bar work off of IE? You can surf fine using it, (or Netscape).

I wish I could send you a screen shot.

Browsing through 'My Computer' has a similar look, but there are different files/apps involved. I use Zonealarm Pro for example. So when I type a web address in 'My Computer', it prompts me to let Explorer.exe access the internet because I haven't given it permission to browse. My Computer uses Explorer.exe, not Iexplorer.exe. So to answer your question, IE and My Computer are not exactly identical.

===========================================================

If the IP address doesn't work, then something is blocking the request. It's not something wrong with TCP/IP, because we know it works in Netscape and My Computer. Perhaps we are overlooking something small? Do you have a firewall installed (i.e. Zonealarm, BlackIce, Norton Internet Security, etc)? If you do, disable it from startup and reboot your pc.

We need to know what Operating System you're running - Win98, Win2K?

If it's not a firewall, then you're looking at wiping IE completely and starting over.

Thank you..

Yes, we have Nortons Internet Security & AV2003.
We turn off the firewall and it has not effect.
We uninstalled IE & MSN Explorer..reload.. and still
no luck.

Is there a preferred way to get rid of IE cleanly?

What is the exact error message? "Page cannot be displayed"?

It's starting to sound like a settings problem under Tools -> Internet Options.

1) Go to the Connections tab and click Lan Settings. Make sure everything here (all 3 checkboxes) are unchecked.

2) Go to Advanced and click the Restore Defaults button.

3) Click Privacy. Click Advanced and tick the option to Override Automatic Cookie Handling along with Always allow session cookies. Make sure First and Third party cookies are set to "accept".

4) Clear cache on the General tab, close and relaunch IE.

Did that help? What websites are you trying? Definitely try something basic like that doesn't require any specific kind of security... ~cdogg

A friends will only work when you actually type or paste in the ip address. It will not work with the name typed like : Any ideas! He uses AOL and Windows Me. A "friend" went thru his computer and deleted some extra stuff for him and now has this problem. He "says" it worked after the deletes but I am not so sure.

Mikey159, your friends issue is a DNS issue. They should check with their ISP if there is a DNS configuration that should be set on the system. joegz

Okay I will tell him right now, thanks!
He did reload AOL though, shouldn't it have set that for him? Maybe I can get him to delete the old versions and reload a new one. Don't know though, he has been an AOL user for a while and probably has lots of stuff he wants to save, settings, email lists, etc. Sorry, thinking out loud.
