Ideas for gigabit link between maximum multimod fiber link

Right now we are at the distance limitation on one of our Mulit-Mode fiber connections. So, the ends will only link at 100base. What options do we have to get the link to Gigabit? We have tried the following:
- Gig extender boxes - will not link
- Single-mode g-bics with conditioning cables - links and works but we see quite a few errors on the switchs

Are we at a dead end here? It seems our only other option is to put down some single-mode fiber.
 
I'm in the same boat with some of my links. AFAIK, ya gotta put in that high dollar fiber. I'll be interested to see if anybody has any work-arounds I haven't tried...
