What's the ideal / best number of stripes when dumping a db?

Thanks in advance

Ideal for what goal? My off the cuff answer is 1: simplest for long-term storage and recovery. But seriously, unless there's a particular reason to cut the time the dump takes, I wouldn't be inclined to use a striped dump approach. It adds a degree of house-keeping that could be a real hassle in the case of recovery (but then, I like to keep things simple).

As to a answer relating to speed of the dump process, I'm guessing there isn't any way to give a good, simple answer to this question. The interaction of DB size, hardware, available RAM, and OS (among, perhaps, other things) would make the linear programming rather complex. I'd suggest trying a few different numbers of stripes (say 2, 4, & 8) and see what happens.

We'd all be interested in hearing the results of your experiments (along with some details about your installation).

Best of luck,
