os: xp home edition
proc: 1.6ghz p4
mem: 256mb ddr ram
cd-rw: lite-on ltr-32123s 32x12x40x

randomly, when opening, closing or writing with the cd-rw, my system will lock up for 10 secs or so and return to normal but leaves my cd-rw lifeless..

i have looked in the event viewer for errors and see this:

event type: error
event source: idechndr
event category: none
event id: 9
date: 5/7/2002
time: 10:38:20 pm
user: n/a
computer: scorpionz
description: The device, \Device\Ide\IdeDeviceP1T0L0, did not respond within the timeout period.

and

event type: error
event source: cdrom
event category: none
event id: 11
date: 5/7/2002
time: 10:38:20 pm
user: n/a

description: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom0.

Could be a problem with your IDE controller or its driver. XP is very fussy about drivers.

Is DMA selected for that drive?

What make/model is your motherboard?

Also, if the CD-RW is on the same IDE channel as the HDD this may have an impact. However, having seen this setup working, I doubt it - there tends to be a performance hit rather than a complete timeout, since the LiteOn burner has a reasonable buffer and Burn-Proof technology.

It's worth trying on a separate IDE channel just to see what happens, though.

Hope this helps CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk
