IDE hard drive cache fix

i put a 40 gig WD drive on the system awhile ago and i think i have been experiencing the cache problem, but i installed the fix from microsoft
apparently the cache doesn't always get written to the drive before shutdown
the fix is supposed to delay shutdown long enough for the write to happen, but i manage to lose significant amounts of information anyway
is it possible to lose a 500mb zip file that was supposed to have been written to a cd writer?
