Hi i always thought that the red line on the ide cable always lines up with pin 1 on the hard drive?? i have a panasonic labtop that a customer brought in and looking at the hard drive the red line is on the opposite side of pin 1. the ide cable also only fits one way??? the problem with the computer is that it doesn't detect the hard drive in the bios...???

Thanks, PAUL

Is the cable ok? Have you tried another one? (is red line on wrong side, or is board forcing connection in the wrong way?)

I've seen several over the years that were manufactured wrong. Used a marking pen to add my own marking.

The keyed system should make it less important. But both ends should be keyed and the matching connectors also.
And pin 1 will be to the right of the key.

In laptops, I would suspect that there is no way the cable could be reversed. Just not enough room to twist it. So I would suspect that the marking is wrong and that the drive has died.

Yes i think this marking is wrong also...the user said that the computer was giving him problems that it would boot up and give an error messege sometimes..then it just died on him..just to be safe im gonna ask him he had any work done to it. I was just confused because of the pin 1 and red stripe on the ide cable...thnx for the feed back.

Thanks, PAUL
