I am adding a second internal HD to my setup. What are the best options for connecting the hardware to to the IDE channels?
My current intention is to connect up as follows:

HD0 primary master
HD1 secondary master

CD writer primary slave
DVD drive secondary slave

HD1 will contain a partition for the Pagefile in support of the operating systems (2 XP OS's) on HD0

Thanks

Buy an IDE/ATA PCI card for your hard drives, all other scenarios have weaknesses.

That's how I would have them.
The weeknesses (compromises) satrow points out are not so dramatic as they used to be: writers are "burn proof" so are rarely effected by being on the same cable as the source and with modern motherboards slower devices don't hinder faster ones on the same IDE channel.
Still I would have the faster HDD's together.

Thank you both for your advice, I will run both HDD's together and see how that works out. I may in the near future have to get an IDE/ATA PCI card so that I can reconnect my ZIP drive which is not used that much these days and maybe less so when I use the spare HDD for backups

Because the two hard drives are using the same IDE controller, having the page file on the 2nd hard drive will not yield as much as having it on a separate controller.

My opinion would be to move the 2nd hard drive to the secondary channel, but the optimal solution would still be to invest in a $20-30 Promise or Highpoint PCI IDE controller card.
