For STD and IDD calls the benchmark of voice quality has been described as “toll quality”. This was generally understood to mean that a call between two parties via the PSTN was the optimal quality that could be expected. Referral to ITU standards talk of MOS 4 as the rating applied to PSTN calls. With the constant downwards pressure on “per minute” cost of toll calls it is becoming apparent that the quality of these calls is deteriorating. This is to the extent that calls made over an IP tie line (dedicated point to point) which are compressed (55 trunks per T1) is perceived as delivering higher speech quality.
The question is has anyone noticed this or has any comments about the falling quality of toll calls?

That's what you get for "free" - JUNK!! QUALITY IS NOT FREE!!!

It is amazing how bad those VOIP calls are with the gargling and gurgling audio, one would think they are all underwater!
Then you add that foreign accent and you have no idea what they are saying! If you listen to the background it's even worse. This VOIP crap has a loooonnnngggg way to go before I would even consider using it.

When you have no Quality of Service, you get what you pay for, and the Internet has NO QOS!!

There is nothing like real audio on analogue POTS...

Wooohhaaaa take a chill pill!

VoIP depends on the line and compression.

For example, we currently are routing calls that normally are hnadled by a pri are being redirect over IP and everyone is saying the calls sound much BETTER!

A G711 call to a decent phone, on a decent link, sounds better imho than a analogue phone on a analogue POTS line.

If you start using the likes of G729 down an overcrowded pipe, then yes quality will suffer.

It is a case of you get what you pay for however, so if you pay next to nothing, expect the quality to be next to nothing.

Add to that the foreign USA (especially southern) accents we have to endure, it makes it difficult to understand :)

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.
