I have read a ciouple of other posts about ID quitting... but I do not have time to search further. I am using ID 2.0 on a Mac OS X (10.3.9).

The problem started when I had to force quit In Design. Every time I tried start ID it briefly came up with a message regarding a missing file which it is trying to recover. There were 3 options, recover now, recover later or delete data. This flashed up and did not give me a chance to do anything! Then it quit. With the 'unexpectedly quit' message.

I have since uploaded the 2.02 upgrade and now, after some fiddling (deleting the two files from the preferences folder and the files in the recovered data folder) InDesign starts up OK, but as soon as I try and open a file, it quits again!

Very frustrating. Any ideas? I can copy and paste the report, but there is quite a lot of stuff in there...

HELP!

I have just noticed, it applies to Photoshop as well. This was open in the background while the crash happened. I am well and truly up the creek now...

It is the same as before. It just will not start.

AAAAGH!

The usual first fix is to trash prefs. They're in user/library/preferences. They'll be listed something like "com.adobeinsdesign.plist". You'd probably be best to trash both indesign and photoshop prefs. Make sure neither program is launched when you trash the prefs.

Another problem can occur because the font cache for the font in use by the doc was corrupted. OSX creates cahces of fonts so the original font does not get corrupted in case of a program crash.

You can trash adobe font caches by using Find to locate "adobefnt". Anything with the ".lst" extension can be trashed.

However OSX creates other font caches that are harder to find. It easiest to use a cache cleaner app for this. I use Font Finagler - a shareware app. FontExplorer from Linotype (freeware) also has a cache cleaner as well as full font management. You can find and download both from versiontracker.com.

If the above fail, you can always reinstall. Before you do though make sure to trash prefs again and also the setting file for the apps - also found in your preferences folder.

Hi Thanks for the response, I tried posting yesterday but there were problems, so I couldnt leave a message, I tried as you suggested but to no avail!

I have since spoken to a guy who used to service our and help out when we had problems. He is recommending a complete re-install of the system software and basically starting all over. Is this neccessary? I would prefer to try all other options before that! Its not a major problem, its just that he cant fit me in until Wednesday afternoon... meaning pretty much 2 days of not being able to do any work!
