just a hypothetical question though... would like to get some input before i try it...

suppose i have two notebook computers that are "wireless-equipped"... one is an XP-home, and has a built-in wireless antenna (wifi, prism, etc.)... another is an win2k-pro machine with a wireless pc card...

suppose i connect the xp machine to the internet via an ADSL-line using its built-in ethernet port...

would it be possible that i could use the xp machine's wireless network connection to "share" the internet to the win2k machine?

i mean it definitely works when we're talking about lan cables, and so forth? but how about "wireless"? would i still need an access point, a router maybe, etc?

thanks in advanced...

Nope, you don't need an access point. You can do peer-to-peer.

Just turn your WinXP into a gateway and use your Win2k to share the Internet connection. :) Wireless 802.11b works the same way as LAN cables (RJ45,etc)

thanks bigcloud...

im already beginning to think that my post wouldnt ever get a reply...

however, a follow-up question though --> if 802.11b works exactly like lan cables, would i still bother with wep keys, etc.? or can i just set-up the ip properties, and let her rip? <-- please do pardon my language...

thanks in advanced...

You're welcome dude :)
Yup exactly like LAN cables.

WEP keys - hmm, I don't know whether you can actually configure the PC Card to enable the WEP keys - gotta get back to you on that.

But yeah, let it rip, but just be careful of war-drivers around your neighbourhood. They might just be accessings your peer-to-peer network without your knowledge :) Thought WEP might be a form of security, pls do not rely on it entirely as it uses a preset string to encrypt. End of day, you would still have to rely on a firewall, be it software-based or hardware.

bigcloud,

hhhmmm... thanks for taking the trouble...

well... i live in a very old neighborhood where most grannies and granddads are living... and im quite sure that i am the only one who was a computer setup... and i have software-based firewalls in each pc... so, no problem with snoopers... <--- i hope...

I have to inform you guys that you can defenetly share Internet access wirelessly with that set up.....Youd have to network them two together....I'Ve done it many times....no need for an access point
