How do i create an icon for the desktop? i read somewhere that i could just use mspaint to save a *.bmp file as an *.ico file. is this a good idea?

Yes. You are absolutely right. I would also create a special folder and name it icons so you can easily find it when needed. Just change your .bmp to .ico like you said and it is a member of the windows icons group.
