A friend has a problem accessing the net ...the computer icons are visible after dialling, but any web page he types in the ie tells him it can't connect. He did have probs with Zone Alarm & a Prog called Bonzi(?). He has deleted IE and reinstalled , upgraded windows ran all the usual diagnostic tests within Windows98 etc all to no avail.
Any ideas? I have searched and given him heaps of printouts but still no good. His ISP says his connections are all OK. Thanx in anticipation P

From posts in other forums, it seems that Bonzai Buddy causes a few problems. If this is what the program is, and it is still installed, then uninstall it and see what happens.

Otherwise, if Zone Alarm is still installed, they may have hit the Big Red Stop Button which shuts down access, or have configured the program permissions incorrectly.

If this doesn't help, do post back.

He has deleted both programmes & tried to reinstall zone alarm without success. Seems a file goes missing vsnetutils.dll. What is the red button you referred to Paul? Would that still impair access after deleting? Thanks for your reply P

I think this is current with ZoneAlarm, I have ZoneAlarm Pro running. When you double click the ZA icon in the system tray and launch the security centre, there is an icon of a red button with stop on it at the top. Click on this and you lock access in and out immediately. It is possible that if it were uninstalled while still locked, it would continue to cause a problem.

As far as the missing file is concerned, it is a ZoneLabs file that runs the TrueVector Service, this provides the ongoing firewall coverage. Kinda important. It should be part of the installation and be copied to c:\Windows\system. If it was downloaded, try decompressing again. Does the fault turn up at install or run?

Install I'm sure Paul . I should get my friend over here to converse with you as I havn't actually got my little mits onto his computer.I appreciate your response I'll get him to look. When I searched the web for that file I found only a large # of people looking for the same thing but to no avail. Could you send it to me please

purdbarb@aol.com.au would really appreciate it
Cheers from Australia Purdy

Purd,

The vsnetutils is part of the ZoneAlarm installation package. It's the True Vector Service. It should reside in the c:\windows\system dorectory.

have you done a search on the harddrive for the file?

Also In Internet Explorer, go to Tools>Internet Options, click the Delete Files and Clear History buttons, click the Settings button and set a reasonable temporary internet files size. Then click the View Objects button and look for any unneccessary ActiveX Controls and/or any that say "damaged" and remove them.

Go to Start>Run, type msconfig. Verify that TrueVector, Minilog, and ZoneAlarm are set to run at startup.

If you still have parts of Bonzai Buddy, try here for complete removal instructionsL:

Thanks...will check all that out P

Thank you Paul & Reghakr. Paul the file you sent (vsnetutils.dll) was installed and then my friend was able to reinstall Zone Alarm. He was then able to access the net as he did prior to deleting Zone Alarm. I did some searching and this seems to be quite a common problem , lose that file , can't access the net , can't reinstall. Thanks again I hope this thread can help others. Regards Purdy

My command buttons back, stop, home etc have disappeared from the screen - how do I get them back?

If you can still see the menu bar, File, Edit, etc right click on a space to the right of help and tick Standard Buttons. If that doesn't help I suggest you come back and start a new thread, you'll get more attention that way.

Goto for info on who to uninstall Zonealarm completely from windows ME. They have any other Microsoft OS listed on there as well.
Good luck. you may also have to replace your winsock keys. Bonzai Buddy for some reason makes a mess out of the winsock keys. It's sort of spyware that makes you laugh. It sends messages back to a central server where info about you is collected ... blah blah... It's a nasty little program and you'll also want to check your computer for something called newdotnet or new.net ... it's bad and causes the same problem. Again Good luck!

Bonzai Buddy is a virus... Fdisk... Format... Re-Install.
That's the only way to get rid of the "effin" thing! Helped many people with the same prob over the last little while... don't install it again!! Zone Alarm is not!!! the problem here.

Good Luck,
Joe
