I have an issue with a Windows 2000 Pro Sp4 machine. The user moved the machine from point A to point B, used all the same accessories and suddenly all the icons are missing from the desktop and the right click is disabled only on the desktop. The desktop icons and My Document folder now appear on the taskbar. I logged in as a new user and the icons show up, but when I double click on a desktop icon, the screen flashes and nothing happens. In safe mode, the programs open and all is fine. I took the machine back to my location and have the same mouse/keyboard and the icons show up on the desktop but some programs work and some don't...any ideas.

Update**If I open up Control Panel or Search on the machine, it will lock up and if I end task, the icons no longer appear on the desktop and right-click doesn't work anymore until I reboot.

Will you people (not just Montreal) stop with the stupid Spyware or Virus replies? The machine was working before they moved it, now it doesnt work very well.

Maybe when the machine was unplugged and being moved a virus teleported in and ruined the hard drive. Possibly when the power cord was out and they were carrying it from desk to desk it magically got some spyware on it. Think that's it?

Jeez, not EVERYTHING that happens in the computer world is spyware or virus related. [/rant]

To help out a bit: I'm guessing something got knocked loose in the move. Video card loose would cause it to lock up like a champ. Open it up and make sure everything is plugged in nice and tight.

The cables in the back may not be plugged in half as tight as they should be... It's got to be something related to the move. Something jiggled loose, or the tower got dropped and the hard drive is dying. Check the connections inside the PC and outside the PC first. Reseat the cards, take them out and put them back in so you know they are in correctly.

Another common one is a loose screw... Moving the computer however carefully, moves the screw about inside until it shorts something out.

Go check the event log to see if that shows anything.

This is a good time to back up user's data just in case there's imminent danger of a hard drive failure. Is SMART enabled? Any SMART message at bootup? After you've secured data, get W2K to do a full scan on the drive.

Or there again, it might be spyware or a virus crept in during transit... [wink]
