I have a Win2k domain with XP, 2K, NT, and a few 9x clients. I have noticed that the 2K and XP machines are sending out quite a few ICMP Echo packets. All of the machines have current MS service packs and patches, and current virus dats (McAfee, dated July 8). I checked the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key, and all services, and startup. Nothing strange. Is this something new with 2000 and XP? (No NT or 9x machines are doing this) or is there something I'm missing? How can I reduce this traffic? Thanks!

Why do you want to reduce this traffic? Is it causing a problem on your network?

No. I just can't understand why there's so much ICMP traffic. My Win2k machine has been on for about 5 hours now and has sent out 516 echos (and received 147). I did ping two or three machines, but not that many.
