Hello all,

I'd be grateful for advice as the procedure involved in setting up a new disk drive in SVR 4. Having installed a new drive, I am getting messages stating that the VTOC has not yet been set up and being a Solaris guy, this means relatively nothing to me. Any links/advice from scratch much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Ken,

I am trying to cast my mind back a couple of years when i had some involvment with DRS6000's. The Vtoc or Virtual Table of Contents is the disc partition information.

I cant recall the commands to create the partitions, but prtvtoc springs to mind I think this shows the current vtoc. Try a man on this, it may point you to other vtoc commands.

There is a system admin tool which I think is fired up with sysadm or sysadmin. You can use this tool to partition your disk.

Hope this helps.

fmthard may be the command you are looking for.
This is also available in Solaris.

Thanks trunix. I have been trying to use fmthard, but get the message '<disk>: Invalid VTOC' when I try to make a partition. There's obviously something wroong with my command, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it could be. The command is:

fmthard -d "3 userptn:data6 m 4 1945010" /dev/rdsk/c1d4

Thanks for the pointers so far. I'm sure I'm almost there, but as usual it's the last mile that gets you!

I dont have access to a DRS machine, so these are just wild guesses.

do you need s2 on the device ?
i.e /dev/rdsk/c1d4s2

Is tag 3 reserved for swap ?

Should there be colons in between i.e 3:userptn:m: etc

Trunix, thanks. I've tried as many variants of the command as I can think of and those suggested by yourself - looks like I may have to get a consultant in to deal with it. If he or she comes up with anything, I'll let you know. Thanks again.
