Hi
I recently installed the release edition of Solaris 9, with GNOME 2 beta from sun.
Things were working fine for a couple of days. But this morning problems occured. First java would not work properly. Stuff like nonclassdiffenition errors started popping up everywhere. IN CDE the terminal would close itself if you pressed the del of backspace key.
I though this was just a reboot sorting matter.
So I rebooted.
The screen would flicker between the time cursor before the login screen and a white screen. This would last for a couple of seconds. Then I get a message saying the Xserver will not start on 0:

I'm guessing this is a serious matter, not just to do with java.

Whats going on.
Is this a major flaw in solaris 9, that after a week, things become broken?

Can anyone help pls.
I'm not going to waste time doing a reinstall until I know what the problem is.
thank you.

Now, I'm no expert, but I would guess the keyword to your problem would be the 'Beta' part of Gnome 2.
I've seen some funk with Sol 8 and Gnome 2 Beta (from Sun site). Things like crossed CDE and Gnome desktops (both Gnome and CDE panels, backgrounds, etc...) when logging in to Gnome, as well as dissapearing panel menu items.

I have Sol 9 running on an Ultra 10 at home without Gnome, and all seems dandy there. Though at home my Sol box isn't doing much besides backing up my other boxes' data.

Hope this helps.

I also have experienced problems with Gnome, but not with any other environments. Although, not quite to the extent as what you are seeing, problems nontheless. Try running in CDE for a while to see if this corrects these same errors. Also, if you really like gnome, check some of your environment paths ($PATH, $LD_LIBRARY_PATH, $JAVA_HOME, etc) to make sure everything points to the right spots.

HTHs,
Blaine
