IBook not seeing Camera

Greetings
I bought an ibook. My current digital camera's instructions say to "simply plug it in" fire wire to usb connection to the ibook. It is not being recognized continuously. I've gotten it to work once today. Restarting alot, seeing if that made a difference. I cant get it to be visual on the desktop as a removable USB drive. Iphoto cant find it as a camera source.
Any suggestions?
