Hello all,
Here's what Ive got:
Intel P4 1.6 GHz motherboard (Model D845WN) & CPU
BIOS Version: HV84510A.86A.0029.P07
256 MB RAM
Adaptec 29160N UW SCSI Adapter
IBM Ultrastar 18 GB Hard Drive
Tandberg SLR5 4/8GB Tape Drive
SCO Open Server 5.0.6Ga
Here's my question:
We've put in lots of servers similarly configured but this one makes a noise I've never noticed before. Everything seems to be running properly, except that every 63 seconds the hard drive whines for about 2 seconds. I timed it with a stopwatch and it's almost exactly every 63 seconds. I've had my ear up to it and, between these whirring episodes, it sounds like the heads are moving (clicking).
Since I've never paid that close attention to the drive before, I don't know if the head clicking is normal. But the whirring doesn't seem normal to me. I'm figuring either:
a) Drive is defective
b) BIOS setting
c) Adapter setting
d) SCO setting
I'm leaning toward a defective drive. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dave
