IBM Thinkpad R51 pops up about 50 windows - not internet

When working in Windows XP, occasionally this IBM will 'go crazy' and pop up various windows will fill up the screen. These popups are related to the programs that are running and some that are Windows-related, like Media Event Sink Window, ActiveMovie Window, EzEjMnApMainWin, AboutGenCalc, SysFader, tpvolbar, Power Meter, etc. We are checking for spyware now, but wanted to know if anyone had seen a similar problem that is hardware-based - if so, how can it be resolved? I have delt with popups before and my two remidies are...

1.Run msconfig from the run prompt and goto the far right tab "startup" and turn off all the stuff you don't need or dont reconize and if disables something that was vital(this has not happened to me yet) you can always go into safe mode and re-enable everything and go from there.

2. Format it all, format fixes almost everything in my mind

I know there are more things out there to fix that problem instead of formating but I just ghost the computer so it takes no time at all.

You may have tried this or it may not help but it is worth a try.
