IBM thinkpad keboard & docking station question

One of our employees has an IBM thinkpad. When he takes it out of the docking station, the keyboard goes into a strange state. (When typing letters you get numbers). Does anyone know how to turn this off? (This user is on a flight out of the country right now so I can't ask model #'s etc.) I'm hoping to have an answer for him when he lands.

Sounds like the Num lock is on. Is he using the 10 key while it is docked? On my HP Fn f8 enables/disables 10 key.
