This is a very common problem with thinkpads 600-600e.

The cmos battery dies and you get an error code 00161 00163.

I just received 2 thinkpads both are 600 and both have the same problem.

I replace the battery in one, and it fixes it.

I replace the battery in the other and I have a weird situation.

I am not able to set the clock in the second one. If the clock is not set the machine wont boot.

Usually after you replace the battery you get the same error codes and then the window to change the clock comes up.

But with this one:

The machine turns on.

Error code 161, 163 (bad cmos battery and time not set)

Password is requested. Hit return and I get the OK.

Error window pops up with error codes (161, 163). I only have the option to click OK or cancel.

I click either and I get the same window telling me to check the manual for the codes.

I am sure this is common as well, its just my first time.

I would be grateful if someone could help me out. Thanks!

UPDATE:

I checked the voltages leading up to the chip. They are a solid 3.0. So I know the chip see,s the voltage.

I guess its looking more like a bad board.

Any help would be great!

Can you try a different battery? Swap one for the other? The new battery may be bad.

The new battery works in the other laptop. I am going to let the system sit with no power for a week and see if that does anything. Like discgarge the caps.
