Today an odd problem came up with an IBM T43p laptop. The screen randomly goes blank. Not entirely blank, but so dim that you can't really see anything. If I hit Fn-F7 (the key to switch to an external monitor) it will come back for a minute or two. No external monitor is connected, by the way. If I do connect an external monitor it will stay on with no problem. So is this a problem with the screen, or could it be something else?

I can't think of the name right away, but it sounds to me like the LCD inverter is going bad in the LCD. You could try picking up and replacing that one part, or just replacing the whole laptop, or maybe finding another one that's listed "for parts or repair", and use the part(s) you need:

I found some postings elsewhere that explained the issue exactly. It seems like the backlight bulb. I'll just buy a new screen rather than performing micro-surgery. This is why I don't buy refurb laptops.

good idea - whole screen.

Of course, on some laptops, the screens cost so much, even on eBay, to be worth doing the micro-surgery... or else just now worth fixing, b/c of the ratio of screen cost to entire laptop cost.
