IBM T40 Laptop and disappearing CDRW/DVD drive

We have a number of IBM T40 laptops in use and the CDRW/DVD drives are disappearing, becoming unusable, in droves. The only correlation we can place is the "push down" of an update for IBM's Record Now software.
Has anyone run into this or have a solution on how to restore the drive?
This is Windows XP Pro on a Novell network.

I'd contact IBM. How old are the laptops? Warranty?

No thanks to IBM (Idiot Built Me). We found that there is one little registry key that needs to be changed after running the update that corrects the problem.
